Sitting at 230 meters above sea level, on the Una River and in a nodule that juts into Croatia, Bihać is just 30 kilometers from Plitvice National Park. It is as close to Vienna (and much closer to Zagreb) as it is to Sarajevo. Yet this is a thoroughly Bosnian town. Visitors, by and large, are shocked when they come to Bihać, which has a population of about 65,000 residents. The impression is something between curiosity about why they have never heard of this relaxed and culturally sophisticated town and wondering if they can rearrange their trip to stay longer. Most importantly, it sits on the Una River, which dominates all aspects of life. The biggest event of the year is by far the Una Regatta.
