The close vicinity to the sea gives Čapljina more than a few interesting characteristics. In Roman times it was a major military camp protecting the trade routes from the sea and Neretva Delta towards central Balkan areas. The ruins of the 3rd century Mogorjelo settlement can be visited today just outside the city center. The town of Počitelj, which many consider to be the most beautiful Ottoman settlement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, has also served as a vital role in the protection of trade routes long before the arrival of the invading Ottomans. It is Čapljina municipality’s most significant attraction. The region’s largest wetlands: Hutovo Blato Bird Reserve – is a protected RAMSAR area. Hutovo Blato is a series of lakes, canals, and rivers. They are home to over 200 types of migratory bird species. The Trebižat, a calm and crystal clear river, can be floated by canoe from Čapljina. The Canoe Safari is an excellent day trip to discover the beauty of untouched parts of Herzegovina.
