Travnik

Travnik

Travnik is often referred to as a “museum under the clear sky.” It is a town that was once the capital city under Ottoman Bosnia. Even its own inhabitants often underestimate Travnik’s historical and cultural importance. Travnik was a town of kings and viziers as well as home to Bosnia’s first European consulate sent by Napoleon himself. Although the Ottomans made the greatest mark on this central Bosnian town, its history, like most of the region, dates far back to the pre-Roman Illyrian era. Though most of the town’s cultural monuments stem from its Islamic influence, the Catholic traditions and heritage is still a vital part of Travnik’s identity.
