Vjetrenica caves

Vjetrenica caves

Vjetrenica is home to more types of life – plant, insect, or animal – than any other cave in the world. UNESCO has identified Vjetrenica as a World Natural Heritage Site patron. It is awaiting verification to be listed as a protected World Natural Heritage Site. The remains of an ancient leopard were found in 2007. That is what got the attention of scientists. The cave has almost 200 different species, 92 being troglodytes or life forms which live in the caves eco-systems and have adapted to life without light. This type of natural phenomenon cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The caves are open to visitors all year round. It is best to call in the off-season to organize a visit. It is best to wear a long sleeve shirt as the temperatures can be a little bit chilly inside. (www.vjetrenica.ba)
