Lukomir

Lukomir

There aren’t adequate words to describe Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest and most remote permanent settlement. Lukomir, literally translated, means oasis of peace. Teetering on the edge of the awe-inspiring Rakitnica Canyon, this was the only village on Bjelašnica’s Sarajevo area spared from the war. The traditional architecture here has largely been preserved and with the new declaration by the Commission for the Protection of Cultural and Historical Heritage, Lukomir may have a chance to preserve and protect its unique medieval structure. Lukomir is part of the last few remaining trans migratory cultures in Europe, where semi-nomadic highland shepherds would move throughout the high Alpine plains with their flocks for summer grazing. Dozens of permanent settlements in the high mountains around Sarajevo are a results of this ancient practice. With much of that culture well-preserved, it offers an exceptionally unique opportunity to see, feel and taste what a medieval European highland village would resemble.
